Pixar has a gift at bringing out the strongest emotions in even the most weathered of us. Borrowed Time, a western-themed animated short film directed by Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj and produced by Amanda Deering Jones, with music by Academy Award winner Gustavo Santaolalla, further confirms this. But Borrowed Time isn’t an official Pixar release. Rather, it is a project completed by Pixar animators Coats and Hamou-Lhadj in their spare time.
Jonathan Fehr, C&I production director and illustrator, brought Borrowed Time to our attention, forced us to watch it, and damn near made us cry. “The animated short film is potentially the most powerful story told in less than 10 minutes since the intro to UP,” Fehr says. “Make no mistake though, this is not for children. The team at Pixar have been perfecting their animation techniques over the last two decades and with that honing of their visual craft, they are able to tell a heart-wrenching story with very few words. You walk the tortured steps of the main character and feel a lifetime of regret and shame in one draw of his breath. No more can be said about this masterpiece that you couldn’t get simply by watching it. And then watching it again.”
