Denver, Coors, livestock, art it all comes together in early January when the National Western Stock Show and the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale come to the Mile High City.

Featuring dozens of contemporary U.S. and European realists who capture the Western way of life, the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale is in its 24th year. Last year, nearly 30,000 people saw the exhibit during the stock show. Proceeds from the $1.1 million in ticket and art sales went to the National Western Scholarship Trust, which provides financial aid to college students studying medicine, agriculture, and veterinary medicine.

This year’s featured artist is Taos-based painter and printmaker Dinah Worman, who has been part of the Coors show since 2011. Her evocative wintry oil painting Community is the signature work for 2017. In past shows, Worman has won both Best in Show and the Southwest Art Award.

Community will be up for auction along with pieces from 66 other contemporary realists, including Alicia Bailey, Michael Blessing, Tanya Bone, Kevin Box, Lois Conner, Stephanie Hartshorn, Linda Lillegraven, Scott Parker, Pati Stajcar, Debbie Stevens, and Rob Watt.

If you’re a collector under 40, mark your calendar for January 2, when the Young Guns reception for up-and-coming art collectors involved in education and philanthropy can purchase artworks and socialize with artists and each other over cocktails on the eve of the Red Carpet Gala Reception.

In addition to the Red Carpet Gala Reception, January 3 also boasts a lunch and lecture titled “The West in Photographs,” with a panel that organizers hope will include photographers Maeve Eichelberger, Lois Conner, Laura Wilson, and Barbara Van Cleve.

On January 4, the 10th annual Petrie Institute of Western American Art Symposium takes place.
